The Role of a School Counselor
The
professional school counselor is a certified/licensed educator trained
in school counseling with unique qualifications and skills to address
all students' academic, personal/social and career development
needs. Professional school counselors implement a comprehensive school
counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement. As a
school counselor, I address the needs of all students through
prevention and intervention programs.
Professional school counselors provide services to students, parents, school staff and the community in the following areas:
*School
Guidance Curriculum--structured lessons designed and appropriate for
each developmental level (Topics include but not limited to: bullying
prevention, friendship skills, social skills, appropriate ways to
communicate feelings, ways to promote kindness and compassion to others,
stress management, goal setting/study skills/career development, etc.).
*Individual
Student Planning--coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to
help students establish personal goals and develop future plans.
*Responsive
Services--prevention and intervention activities such as
individual/group counseling; consultation with parents, teachers, other
educators; referrals to other school support services or community
resources; peer helping; etc.
*System
Support--maintaining personal and professional development,
consultation, collaboration, program management and operations.
